The fight between The Liberation Army and The League of Villians has begun to reach its climax and with it, we see more of Re-Destro’s Quirk and Shigaraki’s memories returning to him. The chapter starts right after the shocking reveal of Re-Destro’s stress-based quirk and three of Shigraki’s fingers being completely torn off. This initially comes off as a massive blow for Shigaraki due to him needing to lay all five of his fingers on an object to disintegrate it. However, this injury causes Shigaraki to have more flashbacks of his family resulting in him beginning another Quirk awakening being able to damage Re-Destro using his two remaining fingers and break free from his hold. Re-Destro quickly knocks Shigaraki back down to the ground and the chapter ends with Shigaraki getting back on his feet and Re-Destro being informed that Gigantomachia has begun to attack the city.
The pacing of this chapter was well done with it balancing the fight between Re-Destro and Shigaraki and Shigaraki’s own inner revelations. The artwork of both characters perfectly captures their unsettling natures such as with Re-Destro’s skin becoming darkened and muscular with his face being surrounded by ominous energy and Shigaraki’s intense close-ups that highlight his bloodshot eyes and wrinkled skin. The last page, in particular, is a highlight with the shot of Gigantomachia tearing up the city with Shigaraki walking in front of that panel and the close up of his eyes signifying the Leauge of Villains beginning to turn the situation around.
The conflict between Shigaraki and Re-Destro in this chapter was largely highlighted with how Re-Destro stops underestimating Tomura purely through his actions. Re-Destro with his idealistic view on quirks sees a direct connection between people’s personality and their quirks and through that states that Tomura is undeserving of respect because the only thing he is capable of doing is destroying and unlike him has nothing to build towards. As the fight progresses and Shigaraki keeps getting up after being struck down, Re-Destro changes his views on him and regrets underestimating him while still continuing to oppose him. Through this, we can see how warped Re-Destro’s ideology is with him wanting to create a society where all quirks are allowed to be used freely but still rejecting those that they believe are unaccommodating towards their goal and are not strong enough.
The full reveal of Shigaraki’s backstory grows increasingly imminent and it is highly probable that within his memories lies a secret to his quirk that he was never made aware of. The secret as to what truly happened to Shigaraki’s family also is growing closer.
With these flashbacks, we see that Shigaraki’s family had treated him well which makes the idea of Shigaraki willingly murdering them doubtable. It’s quite possible that AFO has made Shigaraki believe his own version of the story in order to convince him to follow him. Shigaraki is continuously growing first with his new ability to disintegrate more than just objects that he touches as well as with the tease of him not needing to fully lay his hands on something to damage it. Shigaraki’s growth is also comparable to Deku’s with Tomura’s thoughts on what his family should have to said to him mirroring Deku and his mother’s. The reveal of what this is will likely further emphasize the idea of heroes and villains being two sides of the same coin.
Overall this chapter was an exciting read. The Liberation Army arc will likely conclude within the next few chapters bringing to close what has been a much-needed growth arc for the League of Villains. Come back on July 12th for my thoughts on Chapter 235 of My Hero Academia when it launches on Shonen Jump.
